The biggie: Hawaii and Hawaiian are the correct spelling

It must be really hard to plan a vacation to the islands when you are looking for "hawii travel" or something similar. It's probably easier these days now that the main search engines have that "Did you mean hawaii?" link above the results, but still - what if it asked you "Did you mean Hawi?" Hawi is a town on the Big Island, but most people searching won't know that and will get even more confused. So anyway, correct spellings are Hawaii and Hawaiian. I've seen hawaiin, hawiia, hawii, hawiie, hawiian, hawaiii, and hawiaii. You may see the word Hawaiiana around, that's not a misspelling, it's a word that refers to Hawaiian products and decor.

correct spelling: Kilauea

While putting up some lava pictures I got to thinking about this really REALLY hard to spell Hawaiian volcano. All the vowels make it hard to spell and say. When I have to spell it I think of it phonetically: kill ah oo ay ah -- if you can remember what vowel goes with what sound you are good. Most people pronounce it kill-ah-way-ah though. So, kilauea mispellings I've seen ...kiluea kileuea kilueae and kilouea. The current vent is a hard one too - Pu'u 'O'o, pronounced poo-oo oh-oh.

Kaanapali is the correct spelling

I'm posting a bunch of pictures of Kaanapali Beach to the web on hawaii-lisa.com and got to thinking about Kaanapali. The most popular misspelling of this word I have seen is Kanapali - which makes sense - lots of people have problems with that double a. If you wanted to be completely correct you would place an okina between the two a's like this: Ka'anapali. Searching with and without the okina on Google does change your results though - I would probably go without the okina. Some other incorrect spellings are kana pali kaana pali kanapoli kanapale kaanapale.

Kaanapali is pronounced kah ah nah pah lee and means rolling cliffs.

Wailea Marriott is the correct spelling

So I'm working on some reviews of the Wailea Marriott, and I'm running into some major misspellings. First, I've seen Marriott as mariott, marriot, and mariot - but not as mariotte yet. Hmm, what else could we come up with: mariut, mauriot (or any variation thereof), marry it .. :)

Now for Wailea ... I've seen Waileah, Whylea, wilea, waleah, whylia, and wile. I can't think of any more for this one.

Wailea means water of Lea (the canoe goddess) . It's a dry and heavily touristed area in Southern Maui.
