What we call Hawaii is a chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean. There is also an island called Hawaii which can be confusing. The island called hawaii is also called the Big Island to help alleviate this confusion. Although the Hawaiian chain of islands is actually made up of more than 100 islands, people visit only six islands. These islands are Oahu, Kauai, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and the Big Island. The islands are volcanic in origin, created by the earth's surface sliding over a hot spot. Kauai is the oldest of these islands, and the Big Island is the youngest.
So, if you were to visit one of these islands, you could easily take a day trip to another. Currently, you can only fly between most of the islands. There is a Ferry between Lanai and Maui and the Hawaiian Super Ferry may start to ferry passengers between all of the islands in 2007. For now you can fly Aloha Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines or Island Air or you can take a helicopter tour that only takes a few hours. Another option is a cruise that takes to each Hawaiian island for a day trip.
